What they came up with wasn't just another CLM solution, though. BoostDraft CEO Yohei Fujii and CRO Hiroshi Watanabe instead invented something brand-new to add real value to the legal tech landscape: a lean but powerful markup tool that makes drafting and editing contracts vastly more intuitive.
It all began when Yohei, an AI researcher and management consultant studying business at MIT, met Hiroshi, a lawyer studying business at Stanford.
They started talking about their respective areas of expertise. Hiroshi showed Yohei how he worked on contracts. Yohei noticed something that seemed odd to him.
“Why do you keep searching with Control + F?” Yohei asked. Whenever Hiroshi wanted to find something in a document, he had to manually search for it and then scroll down the page to find precisely what he was looking for.
This didn’t make sense to Yohei, a software engineer by training. Yohei explained to Hiroshi that when coders navigate their programs, they have helpful markup tools that make it easier to navigate thousands of lines of code — quickly locating defined variables or specific functions so they don’t have to waste time searching and scrolling.
That’s when the lightbulb clicked on. Why couldn’t lawyers have the same kind of drafting assistant — but for contracts instead of code?
So Yohei and Hiroshi started building.
